Married, 2 children, August in the Vineyard; architectural historian in private practice. In 1975 I thought I spotted a business opportunity serving a new wave of real estate owners who were curious about the history of their buildings - haven't done anything since, and it has served me well. We now provide mostly document recovery to engineers, lawyers, architects, owners working on existing buildings in New York - like original structural drawings, or historic photographs. I also write a weekly column for The New York Times on the history of New York, and serve as a trustee of the New York Society Library, New York's oldest cultural institution. In my dotage I have begun to collect SPS plates (hey why isn't there one of the observatory?) and attempt to read all the literature I did my best to skip during school.
